The Ugly Chair Transformation

I was recently given a set of dining chairs.  The lady who owned them lives in a tiny flat, and already had two dining tables, each with two chairs.  Eight chairs is more than any pensioner needs, so I took them without really knowing what to do with them.  Then one day, I was wasting time on Pinterest, and I came across a garden planter made from a dining chair!  We have been putting a lot of work into the garden recently and I thought these would make a perfect addition. So we got to work.

First things first, we took a trip to Homebase to get the paint.  I used Dulux Made By Me in Sapphire and Teal.  It was half price so both tins cost less than £8.  Not going to grumble at that.  Then, when we got home I took the pads out of the chairs, gave them a sand down then two coats of paint each.  Even just the paint was a major improvement.

Then it was hubby's turn.  I'd bought some chicken wire at the local car boot sale/market.  Using the wire and a good staple gun, he created 'bowls' that would hold a liner.  The liner was just some leftover weed-matting that he'd used to put under the stones on the garden.  We were almost there.  It was time to fill with compost.

Now came the fun part.  I got to go plant shopping.  We chose winter violas, some ivy, chrysanthemums and some tiny primula/primrose hybrids.  (I can't wait to see how they come up.)  I set to with the planting and here are the results...

When the plants get themselves established there should be a spectacular display.  So there it is.  Four pretty planters out of four unwanted chairs.  I loved making them.  And if I can do it...
